Since the bedroom is fairly small and on the top floor, the 53H 23″ was the solution in my case.I wish I had trusted my initial instinct because as I was watching the computer screen, Amazon increased the price of this model by ten bucks.Compared to my stylish and highly praised Sony MFM-HT 20″ (8.7 stars from C-Net) that appeared a year ago, then inexplicably disappeared from the U.S. market within several months, the Samsung has a “deeper” picture and fuller-frequencied sound.But the Sony’s picture is brighter.You can tweak the brightness, of course, but it’s a shame Samsung took such a dim view of things when making the factory settings.

One caveat: If you’re replacing a 20″ tube set and plan to view most transmitted television signals in accurately proportioned 4:3 ratio, you may sense that the image of the 23″ LCD is smaller than the old 20″ set.I’ve grown accustomed to viewing everything in 16:9, which fills the wide screen but at the cost of undeniable distortion. If you’re especially fastidious about a balanced, symmetrical image, it may make sense to opt for the next bigger size.

I have my WII, PS3, and PS2 hooked up also. WII and PS2 games look just as good as they did on the SDTV. I am only using the PS3 as bluray player/dvd upscaler at the moment. Bluray looks great and DVDs look a lot better than they did on SDTV.

Over the air HD looks great.SD over cable looks good to unwatchable depending on which channel I watching. Unfortunately the channels I want most are not offered in HD yet by comcast. The scifi channel is extremely bad and is the channel I care about the most. I might cancel my cable until they have HD for it. There is no SD channel that looks better than it did on my SDTV. You will want to keep this in mind if you are watching mostly SD.

The best thing about this TV is it has inputs up the wazzu. No need to buy a $50 to $100 hdmi switch box with this tv. Note also the component inputs are 1080p as well.

The bad thing about this monitor is that there is no DVI input. I am using a dvi to hdmi cable for the computer. This is the only way to get the resolution I want.Another poor point is the way you change inputs. They way it is setup makes using a universal remote hard. They didn’t include a separate button for each input. Instead you have the cycle through to the one you want. There is no way for a universal remote to know which input you are currently on so you can not setup a macro to switch to different devices because the remote will never know how long to cycle through inputs to get to the device you want. If each button input had a button assigned to it using a universal remote would be easy. Minor problem but enough to take off a star for me.

One more thing that is bad about this tv. There is no Picture in Picture or Picture Beside Picture. Given all they packed into this TV I find this odd to leave off.

Even with the problems I think this is a great TV. No ghosting or banding. No dead pixels. Just the right sized for my small apartment. Not perfect but darn close.

The audio is impressive for this unit. With it’s SRS WoW settings, the audio sounds clearer and has more range. It’s speakers are mounted below the screen so the unit is narrower than similar TVs with side mounted speakers. This allows for more space surrounding the TV.

I have the unit hanging on a Sanus wall mount and it installed with no problems. My only complaint is with the instruction manual. There are no directions describing how to remove the base. It only states the unit is wall mountable. With a bit of fiddling I finally found the 5 screws located on the back just above the base and the TV lifted off it’s pedestal easily.

This unit is Ethernet enabled. What does that mean? It has an option for viewing pictures across your network, it can check your email and it also has an option for downloading and upgrading the firmware of the TV.

As with any TV there are some Cons.

There is no 1080p input. However the TV does display all video in 1080p so everything is upconverted, including 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. (I hope Toshiba will release a firmware upgrade that will allow 1080p input sometime in the future, but this is probably wishful thinking.)

As with all LCDs, the viewing angle is somewhat limited. At angles more than 45 degrees off center, color looks a bit faded. and the backlight is more visible.

Minor problems aside, this TV is a great deal for the price, has a wonderful picture, great sound, and input connections galore. I highly recommend it!

Be prepared: when connected to SDTV (or basic terrestrial cable), the channels appear grainy and washed out.This is because HDTV’s all display SDTV fairly poorly; they are equipped to handle much higher resolution sources.So, when connected to a 480i source such as SDTV cable, the picture is poor compared to a CRT TV, whose native resolution is 480 lines of resolution.Prepare, when upgrading to any 1080p set, to purchase a cable or DrectTV package with HD channel programming.If you’re hesitant to upgrade to HD broadcasting, probably put off the purchase of any HDTV capable of displaying 1080p, and either buy a larger CRT TV or an HDTV only capable of handling 720p.

Toshiba REGZA LCD TV’s incorporate what is called CineSpeed into their panels.This essentially means the set employs an 8 milisecond or faster response time for refreshing the image displayed on the screen.For fast moving situations like sports, or high contrast movies with action packed sequences, this feature is invaluable.All previous ghosting associated with LCD TV’s has been eliminated, and even bright white objects moving across a dark background look smooth, true to their color, and leave no trail.DynaLight dynamic back light control makes the black truly black, and the whites vivid (almost comparable to plasma TV’s with 10,000:1 contrast ratios).Other features unique to this Toshiba Regza TV are ColorBurst wide color gamut and PixelPure 3G 14-bit internal digital video processing.These options, together, make the picture displayed from 1080 p sources unbelievably clear and flawlessly reproduced without overscanning.

In response to a review posted for this TV, VGA is a virtually obsolete connection.Most high end computers use either DVI (which is also mediocre) and higher quality media center PC’s with Windows Vista premium use an HDMI compatible graphics processing unit with an HD rated display.Few TV’s allow a 1080p source from a VGA connection.XBox 360’s downfall was not using HDMI compatible hardware – this is additionally where the Playstation 3 far exceeds the XBox 360 in terms of hardware with built in blu-ray that incidentally looks outstanding in 1080p with this TV, but also using HDMI as a connection method.This set is comparable in terms of response time and dynamic contrast ratio to the higher priced LG 42″ 1080p model, and beats it in terms of picture tweaking options.The Sharp 42″ Aquos 1080p HDTV has a horrible (1,200:1) contrast ratio and is almost not worth purchasing unless you plan on sitting directly in front of the TV.Also, if you plan to sit 2 inches in front of your TV, you probably aren’t intelligent enough to own one – the difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p is only noticeable based on how close you are sitting to the television and 2 inches would be close enough to notice jagged edges in even ultra XHD or cinema digital which displays beyond 1080p.Close enough, all smooth lines look jagged and that is the nature of the pixel – pixels are square, therefore all curved lines are composed of a series of straight edges.

Also, LG’s comparable 42″ 1080p HDTV is less than 100 dollars more expensive than this Toshiba, and for the record, LG is only in its second generation of LCD TV’s whereas Toshiba is in its 3rd generation (this is the first year for the Regza badge).

If you’re upset about the component inputs and the VGA not handling a full 1080p signal, buy a 1080p upconverting DVD player (under 100 dollars now) with an HDMI output (I suggest Samsung’s DVD1080P7 which has an optical out if you want to hook up to a home theater system).This TV has 3 HDMI inputs and can more than handle all your AV needs.In all, this Toshiba model outdoes Sony’s XBR Bravia, Sharp’s Aquos, LG, and Samsung models.The dynamic contrast ratio, coupled with the Pixel Pure 14bit processing power produces a sharp, clear picture with unbelievable smoothness, clarity, and vivid realistic color reproduction.In addition, this is one of the only TV’s in the under $2,000 range that includes a remote that can be used as a practical universal remote.Some techies love their fancy touchscreen universal remotes a la Logitech Harmony 1000, but this remote is solid, has great range, and is a fitting match to the solid TV it is paired with.Not at all the cheap hunk of plastic you get with the current Sharp LCD TV’s on the market.

The price of this TV, which encompasses a design quality shared with $3500 Toshiba Regza sets, unique Toshiba features like CineSpeed and Colorburst,1080p native resolution, and 3 HDMI inputs make it the best value under $2,000 and comparable to much more expensive sets.Whether an audiophile or just someone looking for a great affordable LCD HDTV, this set delivers.

There are numerous good things about this television, including dark blacks, low noise (no noise except what is coming through the source), high-quality panel (low incidence of panel defects seen in earlier LCD televisions), wide range of adjustments available, beautiful picture quality (on par with the best LCDs available), and a very good price for all of this quality (as of Oct 2007 market).

There is only one known issue (as of Oct 2007): The TV needs to be set to Game Mode to watch football or soccer. This is a simple On/Off setting in the Setup menu. If the TV is not in Game Mode then football passes or long kicks often (about 50% of the time) exhibit a triple-ball effect. It looks something like this: (o). As it moves on screen, the image of the ball shows a repeated image of it’s front (nose) and rear (tail) on either side of it. Most folks will see this triple image, some might just see it as an exaggerated blur (but the triple image is clearly visible when the playback is paused). This should be fixable by a firmware update, and turning on Game Mode fixes it as well, so it’s not a big deal. Game Mode does limit the available picture adjustments, but in practice I can get the picture in Game Mode very close to what I get with the full range of adjustments. (The only thing is that Game Mode turns on some image sharpening that is ok with sports, but is not great with cartoons. So, I use Game Mode when watching football and turn it off for regular viewing. A lot of folks find that watching full time in Game Mode is very pleasing. It’s a matter of preference).

Recommendations for new owners:

1. Give it about 100 hours before the picture settles in. The backlight is a bit bright in the first 100 hours, so I found myself slowly adjusting it up during burn-in.

2. For basic adjustment try Movie with Standard color, Gamma -1, and color on Auto. After 100 hours, backlight can be turned up to 7 or 8 (unless you watch in a pitch black room), and for TV watching Brightness can be 45-50 and Contrast 70-80. On this TV, brightness sets the black level and contrast sets the white level. Turn the brightness up so that the actual black parts of the picture remain pitch black (ESPN HD SportsCenter is a good source for this. You should see detail in the dark suit jackets, but the shadowed areas on the set should remain rich black). Then adjust the Contrast just to the point that pure white objects (like lights or reflections off of football helmets) are white. You can tweak the contrast up from this point to give the image some snap, but don’t go too high (the image can look harsh or washed out).

3. Turn off all of the image processing (DNIe, Edge Enhancement, etc.). The picture will look more natural (give it a couple of days if you’re used to these things on). These things distort the picture slightly to make it look exciting, but the there is noise and other false information added to the image. Turning these things off lets the source be displayed undistorted, so a good source will look terrific.

4. For image size, use Just Scan. This passes the input directly to the screen without any processing to scale the image, resulting in a bit more crispness and clarity. However, some TV signals have a bit of noise at the very edge of the screen. In that case, set the TV to 16:9 and it will slightly crop the edges of the incoming image (this slight cropping, or overscan, is common on a lot of TVs and some broadcasters get lazy and just assume that the very edge of their picture (2-3%) will be cut off).

5. Play around with the Auto Motion Plus feature, but don’t expect it to be great for everything. I’ve tried it on a lot of sources, and generally I leave it off. It can actually make things look too smooth. It’s doing its job as advertised, but the result can look odd.

6. Consider a Harmony 880 programmable remote. I got one after buying the 4671, and it is terrific at automating the changing of inputs as you switch from TV to DVD to Video Game, etc.

7. The Apple TV looks amazing with this TV. It was an unexpected surprise to that see that the Apple TV can upscale to 1080p/60Hz and that the results are on par with my Toshiba XA2 HD-DVD player when it upscales DVD content. I’m very happy that my Apple TV can remain a high-quality source.

8. Standard definition television looks pretty good with this TV, much better than on other LCDs that I’ve seen (but of course it’s still obviously standard definition).

9. The 4671 clearly reveals variable quality among HD sources. When watching HD television channels, some are obviously more compressed, using poorer-quality cameras, and otherwise not as well produced as others. ESPN HD and Discovery HD Theatre generally look excellent, although on HD Theatre you can definitely see the differences in production quality between the various shows.

10. Finally, consider getting an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player that outputs 1080/24Hz content. Movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and the 4671 can accept a 1080/24 signal. This provides the purest movie-watching experience without interpolation of frame rates.
